How does browser-based video compression work?
MediaPix uses FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly (Wasm), which runs directly in your browser. Your video file is re-encoded with H.264 using a configurable CRF (Constant Rate Factor) value, reducing file size while maintaining visual quality. No data ever leaves your device.
Is there a file size limit for compression?
There is no hard limit. However, very large files (over 2GB) may cause performance issues depending on your device's available RAM. For best results, we recommend files under 500MB. Lowering the resolution and frame rate can speed up processing for larger files.
Will compressing my video add a watermark?
No. MediaPix never adds watermarks, logos, or branding to your output files. The compressed video is exactly what you'd get from professional desktop software.
What does the CRF quality setting mean?
CRF (Constant Rate Factor) controls the trade-off between file size and visual quality. Lower values (18-22) produce higher quality but larger files. Higher values (30-40) produce smaller files with some quality loss. The default of 28 provides a good balance for most use cases.
Can I compress video for WhatsApp or email?
Yes! Set the quality to 30-35 and resolution to 480p to get very small files suitable for WhatsApp (16MB limit) or email attachments. You can also lower the frame rate to 24fps for additional size reduction.
